“FEEL THE GOODNESS”
On 3/11/06 the Hauppauge wrestling team, hosted the fifteenth annualTyler Lynde Memorial Wrestling tournament at the high school. The event was named for Mr. Tyler Lynde, an outstanding individual who devoted himself to the betterment of all who came in contact with him. He taught Special Education and coached in Hauppauge from the late 60’s until his passing in 1991. In addition, he served as a lifeguard for the Tobay Beach Lifeguards in NassauCountysince 1957 being elevated to captain of the beaches in 1975 until his untimely death. In addition to the tournament, the Nassau lifeguards host an annual Tyler Lynde Memorial Boat race in his honor keeping his memory alive for all the young men he influenced in his brief life. Mr Lynde’s famous quote “FEEL THE GOODNESS” had an outstanding effect on coach Chris Messina and has guided him in over forty years of success at Hauppauge. Coach Messina explains,
“Much of what I believe today and practice have derived from the foundation that men like Coach Lynde gave to me. His effect on my life as well as countless others cannot be measured by wins and losses but by the dedication, discipline and family values I continue to express to my wrestlers."
This tournament honors his achievements and dedication to our district with all proceeds personally benefiting the Hauppauge wrestling program which Mr. Lynde helped develop during his time at Hauppauge. The time and energy involved in running this tournament cannot be accomplished without help. In the usual Hauppauge style, staff and community members continually give up their Saturday to help support the students, community and the Hauppauge Wrestling Program. I am eternally grateful and proud to be a Hauppauge community member.
